Hillsborough College Announces Theo Wujcik: Tempo, Tampa Exhibition Opening Aug. 18

08/08/2025

TAMPA, Fla. – Hillsborough College (formerly Hillsborough Community College) is proud to announce that it is currently the home of late Tampa artist Theo Wujcik’s archive. In celebration of this significant acquisition and the artist’s legacy, HC Art Galleries will present Theo Wujcik: Tempo, Tampa, a new exhibition opening Aug. 18, 2025, at Gallery221@HCC Dale Mabry.

The semester-spanning exhibition pairs items from the Wujcik archive with original artworks on loan from public and private collections, including the University of South Florida (USF) Contemporary Art Museum, the Tampa Museum of Art and various individual lenders.

“Given our gallery’s emphasis on supporting the regional arts community, the idea was to show an intimate selection of artworks from both private and public collections in the area to highlight a small portion of Theo's much bigger impact on the Tampa Bay community—particularly since this is where he spent the majority of his artistic career,” said Arts Director Amanda Poss.

Through this combination of original artworks and archival objects, Theo Wujcik: Tempo, Tampa immerses viewers in the world of one of Tampa’s most significant artists, whose innovative fusion of visual structure, content, metaphor and everyday materials reflects a deep awareness of our ever-evolving world and reveals that creative sparks can be found all around us.

Theo Wujcik was a Detroit-born artist, educator, master printer and painter known for his innovative techniques. He moved to Tampa in 1970 to become shop director of Graphicstudio at USF, where he taught for three decades while creating artwork in rhythm with Tampa’s early underground music scene and Ybor City’s alternative dance clubs. Collected and exhibited both nationally and internationally, he remained a vital force in the Tampa Bay art scene until his death in 2014.

Theo Wujcik: Tempo, Tampa will remain on view at Gallery221@HCC Dale Mabry through Nov. 26, 2025. The public is invited to an opening reception on Thursday, Sept. 18, 5-8 p.m., with a panel discussion beginning at 6 p.m.
