Hillsborough Community College Surgical Technology Program Awarded Initial Accreditation

12/01/2021

(TAMPA, Fla.) – The Hillsborough Community College Surgical Technology program has been awarded initial accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) based on the recommendation from the Accreditation Review Council on Education in Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (ARC/STSA).

“I am thrilled to have such an accomplishment for HCC as well as myself. Hard work and determination have paid off,” says Kathy Sandmoen, HCC’s surgical technology program manager.

“The goal from the outset for this new program has been to have the inaugural cohort be able to graduate from an accredited AS Surgical Technology program,” said Dr. Leif Penrose, HCC’s Dean of Health Sciences.

The program launched in fall 2020, and the inaugural cohort is set to graduate on December 4, 2021. The second cohort began this fall, and the third is set to begin next semester in spring 2022.

With the recent accreditation earned, continued support from the College’s clinical partners and a newly remodeled teaching space, the surgical technology program is set to be another powerhouse program in the HCC Health Sciences division.

Hillsborough Community College serves more than 42,000 students annually at its five campuses located throughout Tampa Bay. The College is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. For more information, visit hccfl.edu.
