Hillsborough Community College Awarded Fulbright Grant from Department of Education

08/19/2021

(TAMPA, Fla.) – Hillsborough Community College, in partnership with the University of Detroit Mercy, has been awarded a 2021-2022 Fulbright-Hays Group Project Abroad (GPA) grant for educators. This program provides an opportunity for 12 educators to engage in a monthlong study focused on artistic representations of the African-Brazilian Diaspora in Brazil.

“Every year, the United States Department of Education solicits proposals for projects focused on the humanities, social sciences and languages in priority nations/regions. Typically, only 10 grants are awarded each year,” HCC Director of International Education Michael Brennan said.

Fulbright is a cultural exchange program that was founded in 1946 by Arkansas Senator J. William Fulbright that offers grants to both U.S. citizens to study, teach and conduct research abroad and non-U.S. citizens to come to the United States.

“This is our second Fulbright award, and we are looking forward to this wonderful program that builds on the strengths of our last program,” said English associate professor and Fulbright GPA Director Dr. Suzanne Lynch. “We are ready and excited for summer 2022.”

In addition to the pre-program and post-program learning activities, participants will spend one month in northeast Brazil examining several issues including, but not limited to, ethnic and racial affirmation, struggles and triumphs over representation, discourses of harmony and confrontation, and the voices of presence and memory. These topics will be approached from the perspectives of the visual arts, music, literature, architecture, history, cuisine, dance, folklore, religion and the Portuguese language.

The application deadline is Nov. 1, 2021, with a cost-share per participant of $1,700.
