(TAMPA, Fla., 9/23/2020), — Today, Hillsborough Community College received the 2020 Higher Education Excellence
in Diversity (HEED) Award from INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine, the oldest and largest diversity-focused
publication in higher education. As a recipient of the annual HEED Award — a national honor recognizing U.S.
colleges and universities that demonstrate an outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion — HCC will be
featured, along with 90 other recipients, in the November 2020 issue of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine.
This is the second consecutive year that HCC has been named as a HEED Award recipient.
“Hillsborough Community College is honored to once again be a HEED award recipient. It is a recognition of the
value we place on cultivating a respectful and supportive learning environment that is inclusive of all experiences
and backgrounds,” said HCC President Dr. Ken Atwater.
INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine selected HCC because of its longstanding institutional commitment to
fostering equity, diversity and inclusion. HCC promotes access and non-discrimination in employment with regard to
the terms, conditions, privileges and benefits of employment, and prohibits unlawful discriminatory practices,
including: harassment, retaliation, and sexual misconduct. HCC places a high value in operating in a manner in which
all who interact within the College feel welcomed and safe while participating in our programs, services, and
activities.
“The HEED Award process consists of a comprehensive and rigorous application that includes questions relating
to the recruitment and retention of students and employees — and best practices for both — continued
leadership support for diversity, and other aspects of campus diversity and inclusion,” said Lenore
Pearlstein, publisher of INSIGHT Into Diversity magazine. “We take a detailed approach to reviewing
each application in deciding who will be named a HEED Award recipient. Our standards are high, and we look for
institutions where diversity and inclusion are woven into the work being done every day across their campus.”
