For many students, discipline and personal growth are essential to their academic success. China Booker, a full-time psychology student at Hillsborough College (HC), embodies these qualities through her academic journey and her commitment to continued self-improvement.
Born and raised in Greenville, South Carolina, China’s path has been shaped by nearly a decade of military service, intentional self-discipline and a deep commitment to personal growth.
China served eight and a half years in the United States Navy, enlisting March 17, 2015, and receiving an honorable discharge Oct. 31, 2023. Her decision to enlist in the military was inspired by a strong family legacy of service-including siblings who served in multiple branches and encouragement from her father.
“It was scary at first but taking that big step into a new career and a new chapter of my life was life-changing,” China said.
After leaving the military, China decided to pursue a career as a licensed therapist, leading her to enroll in the psychology program at Hillsborough College. Through her coursework, she developed a strong interest in understanding human behavior, mental health and the ways trauma impacts individuals and communities. Her years of military service played a significant role in shaping her sense of discipline, resilience and direction, ultimately driving her toward a callingcentered on inspiring and uplifting others. She said her studies have given her both the academic foundation and the perspective needed to better understand the challenges people face and how meaningful support can make a difference.
“I’ve been through a lot,” she said. “Therapy helped me in so many ways, and I want to help others experience that same kind of healing.”
That perspective is deeply rooted in the lessons she carried with her from the Navy.
“Life is not just about me, but the people around me. Looking out for others is something that really stuck with me,” she said.
As a full-time student, China has found both structure and community at HC, particularly through the Student Veterans Organization (SVO). The organization helps veterans transition from military life to the classroom while connecting them with peers who share similar experiences.
“Being a part of the SVO has been a huge help,” she said. “It provides community. We meet multiple times a month, talk about resources and even spend time together outside of school. It really helps knowing you’re not alone.”
For China, the organization has become a space where she feels understood and supported as she balances academics with life after military service.
China credits much of her success at HC to the support she has received along the way, from her father, siblings and boyfriend to her academic counselor, Tim Arrington.
“Talking with my counselor has been one of my favorite parts of my experience here. He’s been there through it all,” she said.
She also encourages fellow students, especially veterans, to take advantage of available campus resources like the SVO.
“Just because we served our country doesn't mean we don't need support,” she said. “There are resources out there—don’t be afraid to use them.”
China’s journey is a powerful example of perseverance and purpose. As she prepares to graduate from Hillsborough College, she remains focused on her goal of using her experiences to positively influence and support others in their own personal growth journeys. China is set to graduate on May 1 and plans to transfer to the University of South Florida to continue her education.
As she prepares for her next chapter, China carries forward a purpose rooted in discipline, healing and service-determined to help others build a balanced, meaningful and fulfilling life.
