Proposed Fee Increases Under Review by Hillsborough Community College District Board of Trustees

The Hillsborough Community College District Board of Trustees (BOT) will review proposed fee increases for the dental assisting program, emergency medical technician program and the respiratory care program at a meeting to be held on Wednesday, February 27, 2019.

The meeting will take place at the Dr. Gwendolyn W. Stephenson District Administration Center, Board Room, 39 Columbia Drive, Tampa, FL 33606.

Dental Assisting Program: The proposed fees are limited to covering the costs incurred by the College and will not generate a profit. The Dental Assisting program is being converted from a non-college credit PSAV to a college credit ATD program. That conversion resulted in a complete review of the curriculum including student fees. Total student fees for the PSAV Dental Assisting program is $1,052. Total student fees for the new ATD Dental Assisting program is $1,050. This represents a total savings to the student of $2.

Emergency Medical Technician: The proposed fees are limited to covering the costs incurred by the College and will not generate a profit. The new student fees for the noncredit EMT course is $138 per student.

Reason for the New/Increase in Fee:  This new EMT non-credit course is being created to satisfy the learning outcomes of the State’s new Fire Academy PSAV program and will qualify the program for federal financial aid.
Fee Proceeds will be used to: Purchase consumable lab materials ($500 per cohort of 18), pay for required drug tests ($684 per cohort of 18), and pay hospital clinical supervisors ($1,296 per cohort of 18). Accreditation requirements dictate a six students to one supervisor ratio for hospital based training, therefore, a cohort of 18 students require three supervisors).

Respiratory Therapy: The proposed fees are limited to covering the costs incurred by the College and will not generate a profit. The Respiratory Therapy program is being modified by converting an eight college credit course (RET 1024C) into three courses (RET 1024, RET 1458, and RET 1024L). There are no changes in total credit hours or course content. The change to the number of courses is intended to make the curriculum more manageable for faculty and to improve student success. The course conversion resulted in a review of the student fees. There is no fee for RET 1458. Total student fees for the eight credit hour RETC course was $295 per student. Total student fees for the three new courses is $323. This represents a total fee increase to the student of $28.
