The Hillsborough Community College (HCC) Plant City Campus will host the 2019 FIRST LEGO League championship for the West Florida Region on Saturday, February 23 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event will bring together 38 teams of elementary and middle school students from as far north as Hernando County down to Collier County.

“HCC is proud to support FIRST LEGO League in our region to help empower the next generation of college students and innovators,” stated Desh Bagley, regional partner for the West Florida Region. “This is our fourth year hosting the regional championship and we are looking forward to seeing the creativity and teamwork on display at this year’s event.”

Teams will compete in an exciting, sporting atmosphere using LEGO robots programmed to complete space-themed missions. Missions include crossing a crater, launching a spacecraft and ensuring a soft touchdown for a lunar lander.

Teams will also demonstrate teamwork skills and showcase their innovative solutions to problems astronauts face during long-term space exploration.

Several teams will advance to the state competition as well as the World Festival in Houston and the Razorback Invitational in Arkansas, which is attended by teams from around the world.

The event is open to the public and will take place at the HCC Plant City Campus in the John R. Trinkle Center located at 1206 N. Park Rd, Plant City, FL.

FIRST LEGO LEAGUE is global with more than 40,000 teams from 95 countries participating in this year’s Into Orbit season. Called “the sport where everyone can go pro” by founder and inventor Dean Kamen, inventor of the Segway, FIRST is a nonprofit organization that inspires and empowers young people to be STEM leaders and innovators. Research has shown that over 75% of FIRST alumni are now students or professionals in a STEM field.
