Hillsborough Community College Dale Mabry Campus Announces Grand Opening of Food Education Depot

November 14, 2018

The Hillsborough Community College Dale Mabry Campus will host a grand opening ceremony for its Food Education Depot (F.E.D.) on Thursday, Nov. 15, at 2:00 p.m. The event will be held in the Student Government Association lounge located in the Social Sciences Building, room 148. Dr. Ken Atwater, HCC president, Dr. Allen Witt, Dale Mabry Campus president, and representatives from Feeding Tampa Bay will be in attendance at the ceremony.

F.E.D. will serve as a campus food pantry, offering non-perishable food and toiletry items to the HCC community to assist in the eradication of food insecurity. F.E.D. will partner with Feeding Tampa, Feeding America’s local affiliate, to stock the pantry, feed hungry students and help them succeed Recipients need only provide a current HCC identification card to receive assistance.

Food insecurity is a condition related to the availability of nutritious food, as well as the ability of individuals to access and afford such foods on a regular basis. According to Feeding America, more than 40 million Americans were food insecure in 2017, including 12 million children.  A recent study by researchers from Temple University and the Wisconsin HOPE Lab titled Still Hungry and Homeless in College, found up to 42 percent of community college students are food insecure.

F.E.D. currently accepts donations of toiletries and monetary gifts.  The HCC Foundation has established a fund to support the new food pantries on the Dale Mabry and Ybor City Campuses, along with the planned food pantry at the Brandon Campus. Monetary donations can be made by contacting the HCC Foundation at 813.253.7114 or by visiting hccfoundation.com/donate.

The Hillsborough Community College Foundation supports HCC in its mission to deliver affordable educational opportunities that help students become successful, productive citizens. Through annual scholarships, endowments, program and faculty support, and collegewide funding initiatives, the Foundation has awarded more than $12,000,000 since its inception and changed thousands of lives for the better.

Hillsborough Community College serves over 44,000 students annually at its five campuses located throughout Tampa Bay. The college is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. For more information, visit hccfl.edu
