The Hillsborough Community College (HCC) women’s volleyball team has been ranked sixth in the country in Division 1 rankings from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). This is a result of the team’s hard work in the NJCAA National Tournament last week, wrapping up their 2019 season with a 32-10 record.

“I am so proud of everything our team has accomplished this season,” head coach Gary Larkin stated. “We came together and played with poise, discipline and a lot of teamwork. It may not have been the result we wanted, but this will only make us stronger going into next season.”

Facing Iowa Western Community College in their last game, the team gave it their all in five sets. The first set went to the Reivers in a 25-21 score, but HCC won the second set 26-24. The third set was awarded to Iowa Western 25-14, but the Lady Hawks came back to win the fourth set 25-17. In a close fifth and final set, the score resulted in 18-16 in favor of Iowa Western.

The Lady Hawks won their first match in the tournament against the New Mexico Military Institute in a close five sets. In the next match against Navarro College, who ended up placing first in the tournament, HCC lost in three sets. However, in their next match facing Northeastern Junior College, the Lady Hawks won three sets to one.

Even though they didn’t win the tournament, the HCC women didn’t go home empty-handed. The team was recognized with the NJCAA 2019 Sportsmanship Award. #13 Isabel Martin was also recognized, as she was selected to be on the Division 1 Volleyball All-Tournament Team 2019. Martin is a freshman outside hitter from Mauerstetten, Bavaria, Germany.

In addition to those accolades, Larkin was recently named the Suncoast Conference 2019 Coach of the Year. Larkin became head coach back in 2003 and is also an English professor at the college. The team also was named the 2019 Suncoast Conference Champions in October, the sixth championship in HCC history.
