HCC Offering In-State Tuition Rate to Puerto Rican Students Displaced by Hurricane Maria

September 28, 2017

Hillsborough Community College (HCC) will be offering in-state tuition to all students who are residents of Puerto Rico and are displaced from their homes.  The tuition rate change is in response to the ongoing humanitarian crisis following the aftermath of Hurricane Maria.

The change in tuition rates for affected students was authorized in a letter from Gov. Rick Scott dated Sept. 26 that calls on state colleges and universities to “allow any student who has been displaced from their home in Puerto Rico by Hurricane Maria to be eligible for in-state tuition.”

“Our thoughts are with all students and their families who have been affected by Hurricane Maria,” stated Dr. Ken Atwater, HCC president. “We fully support the Governor’s efforts to alleviate some of the financial burden placed on these students as they are faced with the enormous burden of rebuilding their lives.”

Eligible students will receive the in-state tuition rate for the fall 2017 and spring 2018 semesters.  Additional semesters will require approval by the HCC District Board of Trustees.
