Hillsborough Community College (HCC) has been selected by the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) to participate in the Hard Hat Heroes program. The program offers veterans free online courses that lead to certification in skills learned while serving in the armed forces.

“We are honored to be selected to administer the Hard Hat Heroes program,” said Dr. Ken Atwater, HCC president. “We have had the privilege to serve thousands of student veterans within our college community, and this program will help our service men and women obtain certification in a construction trade."

The online course, “Core Curriculum: Introductory Craft Skills,” is equivalent to the first semester of instruction in the apprenticeship program. Course topics include: construction site safety, construction math, hand and power tools, construction drawings, basic rigging, communication skills, employability skills and material handling.

Veterans completing the course by January 1st may be eligible to enroll in the second semester starting on January 8th. An orientation will be held on Wednesday, November 15th, at 6 p.m. on the Dale Mabry Campus. Veterans are required to bring a copy of their DD214 to the orientation. Instructors will be on hand at the orientation to answer any questions about different construction trades.

NCCER is a not-for-profit education foundation created in 1996. It was developed with the support of more than 125 construction CEOs and various association and academic leaders who united to revolutionize training for the construction industry.

Space is limited. For more information on the program, please contact Regina Yaquinto at ryaquinto@hccfl.edu.

Hillsborough Community College serves more than 44,000 students annually at campuses on Dale Mabry Highway in Tampa and in Brandon, Plant City, Ruskin and Ybor City.
