Hillsborough Community College to Hold 48th Annual Commencement Ceremony on Friday, May 5, 2017

May 1, 2017

The 48th Annual Commencement Exercises of Hillsborough Community College (HCC) will be held on Friday, May 5, 2017, in the Expo Hall of the Florida State Fairgrounds.  This year’s commencement speaker is Dr. Walter Bumphus, President and CEO of the American Association of Community Colleges. The student speaker is Debra Morris, TRiO Student Support Services member, who has earned an associate in science degree in business management. The graduation processional will begin at 9:30 a.m.

Over 3,800 students are eligible to participate in the graduation ceremony which includes those who have completed coursework over the 2016-2017 academic year.   Graduates include those receiving the associate in arts, associate in science, and college credit certificates.  The youngest graduate is 16-year-old Miles Nowicki, dual enrollment student, who has earned an associates in arts degree.  The oldest graduate is 68-year-old Charlotte Hopper who has earned an associates in arts degree.

The first class of Collegiate Academy students will participate in Commencement Exercises as well. The graduates include 100 students from Armwood, Leto and Lennard High Schools who have completed 60 college credits at HCC in addition to their required high school class schedules.
Collegiate Academy students start as a cohort in the 9th grade and follow a rigorous curriculum that enables students to graduate with their associate in arts degree prior to graduating high school. The Collegiate Academy program not only expedites the time to obtaining a bachelor's degree, but it allows students and their families to earn a savings of about $6,000 in college tuition.

It is anticipated that over 1,150 students will participate in this year’s ceremony.

Hillsborough Community College serves more than 45,000 students annually at campuses on Dale Mabry Highway in Tampa and in Brandon, Plant City, Ruskin, and Ybor City.   HCC is accredited to offer associate degrees and certificates by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
