HCC commencement speaker inspiring grandchildren to complete higher education degree

April 21, 2017

Sixty-year-old Hillsborough Community College (HCC) student Debra Morris returned to higher education as an example to her nine grandchildren. Debra worked a full-time job while attending classes part-time at the HCC Ybor City and Dale Mabry Campuses. In addition to a full work and class schedule, Debra is also an active participant in the TRiO Student Support Services program and volunteers at the Patel Conservatory and the teen support group, S.O.A.R. First.
“It’s important for me to continue my education, but it’s more important that [my grandchildren] continue also,” said Debra. “We create the limits of our goals; we set the standards for those who follow us. Whether it is planned, or not, we are setting the examples every day.”
Debra will graduate from HCC with an associate in science degree in business management and hopes to explore psychology and sociology for continued studies. Debra plans to attend the University of South Florida in the fall.

Debra will share her story as commencement speaker during the 48th Annual HCC Commencement Exercises on Friday, May 5, 2017 in the Expo Hall of the Florida State Fairgrounds. The ceremony will begin at 9:30 a.m.
Hillsborough Community College serves over 45,000 students annually at its five campuses located throughout Tampa Bay. The college is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. For more information, visit hccfl.edu.
