Gallery221@HCC presents Ruby C. Williams – Farming, Family & Folk Art

January 8, 2013

Hillsborough Community College’s Gallery 221@HCC on the Dale Mabry campus opens Ruby C. Williams – Farming, Family & Folk Art on January 14 with an Artist Reception, Thursday, January 17 from 5 – 7 pm. An Artist Talk is scheduled for 6pm with Williams, who will be joined by the City of Tampa, Art Programs Division Manager, Robin Nigh and Gallery 221 Director, Kathy Gibson.

Ruby C. Williams is a known folk artist in central Florida and throughout the southeast, and was part of a traveling folk art show featured at the Smithsonian Anacostia Museum in Washington DC. In 2005, Williams was honored with a Florida Folk Heritage Award and was recently acknowledged by the Plant City Bruton Memorial Library with a celebration and display of historical works.

The lively exhibit in Gallery 221@HCC features communities that Williams’ has cultivated over her 80+ years. One wall shares a collection of pieces, all on loan, from Williams’ community of folk art collectors. Another wall presents a three dimensional choir of life-size painted characters inspired by Williams‘ broader community. The land that Williams’ lives and works on in Bealsville, Florida, was founded by her family, and four other families of freed slaves in the late 1800‘s, and represents another community of influence highlighted in this educational and historical show.

As you take in the exhibit, you will hear audio of Williams’ rich, southern voice, sharing some of her stories and life wisdom, as part of an interview recorded for Florida Stories which aired on National Public Radio.
