Burton and South Derbyshire College played home to budding business students from across the pond for a week last month. Students and teachers from Hillsborough Community College, in Tampa, Florida stayed in Burton from Monday, May 22 until Friday, May 26 as part of their visit to the country.

The group joined business students from the college in lessons throughout the week, with both sets of students and teachers having the change to exchange thoughts and opinions.

Star Stallings, one of the students visiting from the American college described Burton as a fantastic place to visit.

She said: "I have loved visiting Burton. It has been a different and diverse experience. I would encourage people to come here and experience it for themselves. I think being based with local people is really important too as you get to know what it's like to live here."

The group visited Marston's Brewery and St George's Park as part of their visit to the country, to see how local businesses work within the environment and how business culture changes in the United Kingdom.

One of the business tutors who visited from Hillsborough Community College, Katen Amin explained that the visit has given their students an insight into the Brexit vote.

Katen said: "The visit has been fantastic; I don't have words to describe how wonderful everything has been, from the international team to the host families and the hospitality. The visit has given our students an insight into the Brexit vote and has allowed us to draw similarities between Britain and America."

Ann Walton from Burton and South Derbyshire College said that the visit was just as beneficial to the Burton students.

She said: "The visit was extremely successful, providing a platform for the students to exchange ideas and have informative discussions. Opportunities such as this widen our students' cultural horizons and help them to develop vital employability skills for success in the global workplace.

"We look forward to welcoming students from Hillsborough Community College to BSDC again next year."
