Jane Comfort and Company Present 'Beauty' at Hillsborough Community College
Beauty is a provocative dance theater work exploring the American notion of female beauty. It frames the dialogue of the cultural pressures surrounding women’s physique, attire and appearance around the quintessential image, Barbie. Movement vocabulary is derived from an investigation of Barbie’s limited, robotic abilities contrasted with a fully expressive dance vocabulary. Beauty includes a Barbie beauty contest and an intimate encounter between Barbie and Ken. The piece was created with the support of a 2010 Guggenheim Fellowship and a National Endowment for the Arts grant.
The Mainstage Theatre is in the performing arts building of the Ybor City Campus. It is located at the corner of E Palm Ave and N 14th Street (Avenida Republica de Cuba). General admission is $10.00. All HCC students, faculty and staff are admitted free of charge with valid ID. The box office opens a half hour prior to the performance.
Jane Comfort and Company creates dance theater works that push the intersection of movement and language to a new form of theater. Called by the New York Times “a postmodernist pioneer in the use of verbal material in dance,” artistic director Jane Comfort addresses contemporary social and cultural issues with compassion and wit. The company is an extraordinary group of dancers, actors and singers whose multiple talents allow Jane Comfort to create deeply layered works utilizing a wide range of theatrical elements.
Since 1978, Jane Comfort has created more than 50 dance and theater works presented throughout the United States, Europe and Latin America. Recent works include An American Rendition, commissioned by NPN and NYSCA and voted a Best of 2008 Performance by both WNET Sunday Arts and Gay City News; Fleeting Thoughts, commissioned and produced by Danspace Project, with live music by Joan La Barbara. She received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2010 for the creation of a new dance work, Beauty; a BESSIE Award for Underground River in 1998; a Collaboration Award from the Coalition of Professional Women in the Arts and Media in 2006 for her collaboration with composer Joan La Barbara on Fleeting Thoughts; a Doris Duke Award for New Work in 2000; and a Habie Award for distinguished service to the arts from the University of North Carolina in 2003.
