Hillsborough Community College (HCC) is on the forefront of preparing men and women to be leaders in the construction industry. HCC offers construction apprenticeship training on our Dale Mabry Campus through the Florida Gulf Coast Chapter of the Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc. (ABC). ABC is a national management association for the construction industry which actively promotes the merit shop form of construction.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Florida added 34,700 construction jobs in 2016, more than any other state. Many construction firms continue to face shortages of available qualified workers as they try to keep pace with growing demand.
In the last year, HCC has seen around a 10 percent increase in enrollment in all apprenticeship programs where students have the opportunity to earn a paycheck while they learn new job skills. At HCC, industry professionals offer students a combination of classroom and on-the-job training in addition to essential hands-on knowledge that teaches them to apply their new skills accurately and effectively.
Apprenticeship training programs are offered in the fields of HVAC, electrical, carpentry, sprinkler fitter, sheet metal and plumbing. Students who complete the program are certified with a “journeyman” employment status.
