The Florida Department of Education awarded the Tampa Bay Consortium a $279,767.52 competitive grant to implement the College Reach-Out Program (CROP). Hillsborough Community College (HCC) is a member of the consortium which includes St. Pete College, State College of Florida and University of South Florida.
HCC’s portion of the grant is about $67,700. The funding allows the college to continue to engage, promote and motivate students in grades 6 through 12 to attain a postsecondary education.
CROP at HCC is designed to increase the number of educationally and economically disadvantaged high school and middle school students who will enroll in college upon graduation from high school. The program serves students in grades 6 through 12 who are eligible for or receiving free or reduced lunch. CROP students receive counseling and information about college admissions requirements, scholarships and various student financial aid programs. Currently, 170 students are a part of CROP at HCC.
CROP was established in 1983 by the Florida Legislature to motivate and prepare students (grades 6–12) from low-income, educationally disadvantaged backgrounds towards pursuing and successfully completing postsecondary education. Since the program began in 1983, CROP has served approximately 193,500 students. CROP serves a diverse student population that includes African American, Hispanic, White, Asian, American Indian, and multiracial groups.
Hillsborough Community College serves more than 44,000 students annually at five campuses and three centers throughout Hillsborough County. HCC is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
