Gallery 221 Presents Selina Román: Please Disturb
Break-ups aren’t easy and many times one may fantasize about just how good the relationship was while overlooking the unpleasantness of it that others can clearly see. Such is the case with Selina Roman’s latest photographic project, Please Disturb. Roman is a Florida native who has spent much time developing a relationship with south Florida and all of its beauty as well as its flaws. In this series she has utilized various Florida motel rooms as a studio space to create sophisticated photographic images that tell fabricated stories and leave space for the viewers to come to their own conclusion about what is taking place. The artist has stated that it is at the intersection of perception and reality that she would like the viewer to stop and consider what they hold beautiful and their reasons for doing so. Roman utilizes props in much of her work and this series is no different; rubber gloves, bubble wrap and lots of sequins are ubiquitous, as are her signature colors of pink and turquoise which further reinforces the artist’s love affair with the state. This series is as much about a sense of identity and finding one’s self in the midst of chaos as it is about a sense of place.
Roman’s work explores ideas of femininity, perception, and how the unseen offers more answers than what is visible. She received a Masters of Fine Arts from the University of South Florida, Tampa. She has participated in residencies with the Visual Artists Network and Diaspora Vibe Cultural Arts Incubator in Miami. Her work is in the permanent collection of the Leepa-Rattner Museum of Art, Tarpon Springs, as well as numerous private collections. She has been exhibited nationally and internationally at institutions such as Kenyon College in Ohio, Edna Manley College of Visual and Performing Arts in Kingston, Jamaica, and Universidad del Sagrado Corazón in San Juan, Puerto Rico. She currently teaches photography at the Art Institute of Tampa.
All programs are free and open to the public.
