Hillsborough Community College (HCC) Honors Institute student Shawn Zamani can do it all. Shawn moved to the United States from Iran almost four years ago, but he hasn’t missed a beat. He’s the president of HCC’s chapter of Phi Beta Lambda, an Honor’s Institute Ambassador, a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars and he volunteers countless hours to giving back to his community. Shawn credits his dedication to hard work and service to the relationships he built at Hillsborough Community College.

HCC Student Shawn Zamani “I chose HCC because of the true community feeling, said Zamani. “The smaller class sizes help us create a lot of friendship bonds and help us get to know our faculty.”

Shawn Zamani is one of the many students making the HCC community proud through outstanding achievement. Shawn is one of only 20 students chosen from more than 1900 nominations to be a part of the 2016 All-USA Community College Academic Team.

He was enjoying dinner with his sister, Shahrzad, when he received the news. He says disbelief was the only way to describe the feeling.

“I read the email a couple of times, then I had my sister review the email and after that we were so excited,” Zamani exclaimed. “We were celebrating!”

Zamani received a $5,000 scholarship and a medallion in addition to the prestigious honor. He accepted his awards during the 2016 American Association of Community Colleges Convention in Chicago, Illinois.

“It means a lot to me that I was recognized because I want to continue my education, further myself and grow,” Zamani explained.

Shawn believes the HCC Honors Institute played a major role in helping him achieve his academic, personal and professional goals.

Shawn and student ambassadors at the 2016 HCC Presidential Showcase“I think the Honors Institute provides all the opportunities students need to develop their skills, their professionalism and to be able to continue their education,” said Zamani. “The Honors Institute has a wonderful team of mentors that helps students, guides them and gives them feedback on their education and it’s a wonderful experience.”

Shawn is just a few weeks away from graduating with his Associate in Arts degree in Liberal Arts. He plans to earn his Masters in Public Health and later attend medical school. He says no matter where he goes, he’ll never forget his start at Hillsborough Community College.

“I would definitely go through it again,” said Shawn.
